iPod Touch: Accidental Chic

My iPod Touch came with an Apple logo sticker, which I stuck on the back. When it peeled off, it left this grungy, logo-shaped layer of funk that is also slowly peeling away. It’s accidental chic.

In case you’re wondering, my iPod really is that scratched. Though I do use screen protectors, I do not like product cases that change the characteristics of the item they protect. I bought the iPod Touch because it’s sleek, shapely, and slides easily in/out of pockets. All the cases I’ve seen would change those key characteristics.

I also believe the way a device disintegrates is just as important to the experience as how it functions when new. I’m committed to this device until it dies, gets lost, or disintegrates, so why bother with keeping it in brand new condition?

Of course, if I had an iPhone, I would probably put it in a case. At least to protect it from drops.

  • I've been thinking more about it. There is clearly a cut-off point for when I would case a device. I'll bet it's a sliding scale, though, strongly influenced by the type of use it would get.

If I were a more rugged individual who regularly broke his toys, I would consider a case. I don't take the iPod running, hiking, biking, kayaking, or anything like that. Just in the car, the gym, and in bed when I can't sleep.

On another note: I am none too pleased that Apple is charging $10 to upgrade the iPod's OS to 3.0. If iTunes keeps pestering me to upgrade, I may consider jailbreaking the thing.
  • Brutal! I always use cases so I can sell my old gadgets on eBay when I want the new one. We just sold Mary Beth's old iPod Nano 3G for $150 on eBay to pay for her new iPhone 3GS. She had that iPod for almost two years!
  • I cased my iPod a long time ago and after reading Luke's post, I realized that my iPod has not seen the light of day in years due to its iFrogz.com case. I

I have now unsheathed the iPod and I'm going to see how it goes. The look of the iPod was one of the reasons I bought it.

So, somebody has had to of done a Cost Benefit Analysis on casing or not casing your new technology? For me, the cost of the lost old iPod is less than the loss of the coolness factor.

What other measures go into this decision? KL
  • eBay shmebay. I find your lack of commitment to your devices disturbing. :P

I do treat my high-end cameras like infants, swaddled in the most protective enclosures when not in use. But there's a cutoff point below which I just don't mess with it. Too cool for a case! I should print a sticker that says that and stick it on my iPod...
